The Mesentery and Mesenteritis
Keywords:
mesentery, mesenteritis, mesenteric panniculitisAbstract
The mesentery is a double sheet of peritoneum that connects the intestine to the posterior abdominal wall. Today we know that it is continuous from the small bowel to the colon, comprising the right and left mesocolon, the mesosigmoid and the mesorectum, having an interface with other organs of the economy through its “hilum”. It is, therefore, an anatomical platform in which all digestive organs are integrated with lymphatic, vascular and neurological elements, supporting the embryological development of all abdominal digestive organs. It is thus today recognized as the 79th organ of the economy.
Mesenteritis generally represents an increase in the attenuation of mesenteric fat, usually discovered on computed tomography, and may be a primary or secondary manifestation of a pathological process, and which must be noted in the report and the clinician's attention drawn as to the possible need for further investigations, depending on the individual clinical presentation, since carcinoma and lymphoma are among possible causes of this infiltration, although this association remains controversial.References
