A pancreatite aguda (PA) é uma patologia com amplo espectro etiológico e de apresentação clínica. A compreensão da sua patogênese evoluiu consideravelmente nos últimos 20 anos e, proporcionalmente, definições sobre as alterações morfológicas puderam encontrar consenso em terminologia única definida pela Classificação de Atlanta de 2012. A compreensão das fases evolutivas, das alterações estruturais e das complicações locais é fundamental para a instituição ágil de medidas terapêuticas. O diagnóstico deve ser pesquisado em diferentes níveis que incluem não apenas a identificação da doença, mas também do seu nível de gravidade, das complicações morfológicas e da presença ou não de infecção.
